Kids these days do not always have access to the fun of riding a dirt bike or speeding along the bay in a boat, but Neil Druker is working hard to share these experiences with kids in his community while simultaneously teaching them about safety and the importance of always obeying the laws.
Neil Druker Teaches Tykes
As a kid, one of Neil Druker favorite activities was riding dirt bikes with his family. Now that 50s are readily available and even young kids can enjoy the revving of the engine and exhilaration of riding through the whoops, Neil Druker has committed much of his free time to teaching little tykes how to ride safely.
Through a joint initiative that he has put together with some of his riding buddies, Neil Druker has created a small dirt bike track where kids and their families can come to ride. From races to lessons, and everything in between, this track allows kids to experiment with their riding styles in a safe environment.
Putting Safety First
Anytime there is a motor involved, or a child involved, for that matter, safety has to be a number one priority. Neil Druker and his friends do not let anyone ride on the track without the proper gear, from helmets to boots, and hold lessons on safety before each and every race. Not only does this keep the kids safe, it keeps the parents a little bit calmer on the sidelines.
A Family Affair
Because Neil Druker loved riding with his family, he encourages entire family units to come out and enjoy the races. While kids and teenagers tear it up on the track, they are cheered on by the adults. Oftentimes, kids are polarized in their feelings for reading—they either love it or they hate it. Parents everywhere try everything they can think of to get their kids interested in a good book, but they know as well as you do that pushing children into an activity they do not enjoy will not end well. Neil Druker is trying to take a different approach, one that convinces kids they love reading before asking them to turn a single page!
How Does Neil Druker Do It?
Kids learn about so many new things that it can be difficult to keep up with their ever-changing interests. One day your child may be all about basketball, the next they may be consumed with archaeology! School is a great contributor to these changes in favorite subjects, which is a great thing. What Neil Druker hopes to do is take that interest to the next level (well, the next reading level).
Getting your child to sit down with a book may seem like a chore, but Neil Druker has devised a design for an elementary school reading club that first gets students talking about their interests, then gets them reading about them. Through one on one attention, students are able to open up to Neil Druker and other volunteers about their favorite things, then Neil Druker and the rest of the reading club leaders can show them where to find books on these topics.
What Books Count?
Reading is an activity that will only enrich your life if you push yourself, so Neil Druker motto is that what kids are reading does not matter—it is how they are reading it that counts. Take comic books. These get a bad rap in the literary world, but comic books have gotten children who otherwise would not pick up a book to read for hours on end. As long as kids are reading the words and becoming involved in the plot, rather than just looking at the pictures, it is a beneficial activity.
However, it is important for kids to always be on the lookout for reading material that will both interest them and challenge their reading skills, allowing them to reach higher reading levels and improve their comprehension.

All too often, animals are surrendered by their owners to a shelter. Oftentimes, the owners truly believe that these animals will be safe and find a lovely home, but the sad truth of the matter is that most animals that are surrendered to the shelter are euthanized. Neil Druker, an active animal rights advocate and a lover of pets, is trying to spread the word about alternatives to owner surrenders.
You see, depending upon the amount of animals that are already in the shelter, pets that are surrendered by their owners may have as little as 72 hours to attract a new family before they are put to sleep, if they are given any time at all. Neil Druker has seen the sadness in owners’ eyes as they have given up their pets, and has witnessed firsthand the depressing ways in which animals try to adapt to the shelter but miss their families. To help owners find alternatives, Neil Druker has recommended several different ways of taking care of pets.
- Find a new home for your pet, do not simply take it to the shelter. There are several online communities that can connect you with families looking for a new fur baby, so take the time to scope these sites out and find a family that will be right for your pet. Doing so will mean all the difference between a happy, healthy life for your dog or cat and ending its days in a shelter. Make sure that you do your due diligence when interviewing someone, though, as you want to ensure that your pet will be safe and happy in its new home.
- Ask a family member to keep an eye on your pet. Neil Druker often sees people give up pets that they would love to keep, but cannot during a temporary move or other extenuating circumstances. Censorship is an unfortunate practice that has run rampant during many eras, and even in today’s “forward-thinking” society books are being challenged and banned by schools, governments, and other institutions. Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no, no one person can end illiteracy. However, Neil Druker and others who are passionate about the cause are able to improve literacy rates in their communities and fight to help other people become aware of this problem in America.
Too many people assume that everyone knows how to read and write, but the awful truth of the matter is that kids and adults all over the country go about their daily lives without being able to communicate through the written word. Think of all of the different ways that you use writing and reading throughout your day… not being able to read would really have a negative impact on your life. Neil Druker understands how important it is for everyone to be able to read and to write, and he also understands that the number of illiterate people in the United States of America is much higher than the average person thinks.
So, what is he going to do about it? Well, Neil Druker has already initiated a number of community-based programs to help improve literacy rates and teach people how to communicate through the written word.
